Vernal Equinox: The First Day of Spring

We no longer need to hold onto the hope we embraced throughout the winter.

Spring is finally here. We excitedly listen to hear the chirping of the birds during breakfast. The kids trade their sleds for scooters, get out bikes and blow bubbles. There is still a chill in the air, but we venture out for walks on paths that were covered with snow just one week ago.

Piles of snow still remain but patches of grass are now visible. We are starting to see plants we knew were there, somewhere, beneath the frozen ground. We search for sprouts, discover tiny buds on the tips of branches, marvel at a slender blade of grass breaking through clumps of heavy earth. Birds are nesting. We crouch down to study seedlings and peek up to see hatchlings. There is new life everywhere we turn.

Hope surrounds us.

This is a time of beginnings.

We are being offered a fresh start. Spring cleaning removes dust, dirt, and clutter from our homes. The debris that has accumulated over the cold months can be swept away, leaving an inviting space. Our external environment affects our internal one. In this way, we are helping clear our minds as well.

This is a time of balance.

On the equinox, day and night are of equal length as the sun crosses the equator. Today, we experience the same amount of darkness and light—outside and within ourselves. Take a moment to meditate, to reset. Adjust any imbalances you feel.

Bring ideas out into the open. Breathe life into them. Write. Paint. Take up a sport. Begin that project you’ve been talking about for months (or years). Rejuvenate yourself. Watch the world around you grow, and allow your dreams to grow with them.

  1. Ah ha! As my dad would sing on this day ‘The spring has sprung, the grass is riz, I wonder where the birdie is? The bird is on the wing. But that’s absurd, the wing is on the bird’. Happy new season…

  2. Beautiful, Sarah. I wish you a basketful of fresh beginnings in your springtime. Best wishes for the spring cleaning! Our autumn is just beginning – never did get that spring cleaning done! 🙂

  3. Oh, yes! I love this time of year when the promises of renewal manifest, the light returns and hope soars with the birds. I saw my first tree swallow today. Do you have those in your area? They are iridescent blue on top and bright white underneath. They are like little race cars of the sky. Enjoy!

    • I love that: hope soars with the birds. It’s wonderful, isn’t it? We don’t have to grasp hope so tightly anymore — we can loosen our grip, knowing it’s here (or on its way). 🙂 I’m not sure about swallows… I’ll have to ask the bird expert (my son). We have a lot of chickadees, blue jays, woodpeckers, and wrens. The occasional cardinal and tons of finches in the summer.

    • *bleep* no! I took that photo last year. I love it but, alas, I will not be seeing anything like that for a few weeks. It actually snowed on the first day of spring (after I wrote this post). But spring has sprung whether it feels like it or not and I will be taking this time for balance and new beginnings. 🙂

  4. The first day of spring here in Bialystok was beautiful, warm and sunny. It snowed the next day. But haven’t had nearly as much snow in Poland as the US this winter.
I love this time of year.

    • That sounds lovely — a warm, sunny day for your first day of spring. It snowed here but has been sunny (and freezing) since. At least you got that one day of sunshine before your snow. Despite the cold, rain, and melting snow, I love this time of year, too. It’s so full of hope and promise.

  5. This was lovely. You painted a vividly wonderful picture of spring changes. Morning bird chirping is delightful, waking up listening to them outside the window is better than any old alarm clock. I guess I should keep to myself that just yesterday it felt like summer was already upon my neck of the woods. We were donned in shorts and tank tops… Which is not bragging on my part 😦 Spring is my favorite season and I think it skipped us down here.
