“There is a crack in everything.
That’s how the light gets in.”
These oft-quoted lines from Leonard Cohen are some of the most beautiful words to ever be strung together.
To me, they speak of hope. The full and complete appreciation of light when submerged in darkness. This is a theme I explore often—both in life and in writing.
Nothing is perfect. Nothing is flawless. And therein lies the beauty.
When we are broken, it is at that time and it is at the place where the break is, that the light gets in.
Leonard Cohen’s poetry and songs have touched many. His voice, singing his remarkable words, never fail to bring me to tears.
Things are broken. But now the light can find its way in.

I recently discovered his writing though I’d listened to him before. That’s the type of life we should strive for. Honest, rough, far from perfect, creative, and striving to find our best.

His lyrics are poetry, too. Let me know how you like his writing. Love this: “Honest, rough, far from perfect…” Yes. ❤️

Yes, Yes, Yes! And so pertinent to now. Such clarity in his choice of words and your post is gracefully written. Thanks for that.

Aw, thanks. He is so quotable but I absolutely love these lines. Pertinent now for sure. 💕

Beautiful post, Sarah. This reminds me of Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with a special lacquer mixed with gold, silver, or platinum. The philosophy is based on recognizing the beauty in broken things.

I had to look this up. It is stunning. ❤ Thank you for sharing this. What gorgeous art and an amazing philosophy. I actually have that right in the intro of my book: "I love the beauty of broken things."

I love that it’s right in your book. I checked your blog just now and didn’t see a book. Is it in progress?

Evocative as ever, Sarah – but I am biased. His lyrics have contained so many profound words I’ve lost track, but I did use this quote to promote my post about him. It says so much, but is so simple (and, knowing how he worked, it probably took him months to arrive at just the right composition).

He has so many beautiful words but, agreed, these lines are complex and deep in their simplicity. Maybe that’s part of what makes them so powerful. Thanks, Graeme.
