So. It has come to this.

Yes! It really has. It’s here!

Hinting at Shadows is now available in both eBook and paperback.

After some minor bumps and bruises with the ever-delightful formatting process, I am finally able to release my book into the world.

This is a collection of short fiction. Flash, micro, sudden, postcard, hint… Whatever you label it, it’s fiction. And it’s short.

I hope to entertain but, really, it’s awesome if I can spark your imagination or get you thinking about possibilities.

As most of you know, when I write fiction, I turn to the dark side. (I am this close to a Star Wars reference…)

This book is a mixture of darkness and softness. I skip the gore and go straight for the heart, allowing words to whisper dark, suggestive snapshots of the psyche. I’m fascinated by human nature. These are stories that hint at the things in the shadows.

Thanks to all you tweeps, blogging friends, and writer buddies who supported, encouraged, and, quite frankly, kept me going with your excitement for this project. You are all awesome. A special thanks to Sacha Black, Rachael Ritchey, and Loni Townsend for all their help.

Each selection is approximately 100 words, with a bonus section of Microbursts in which each story is told in 50 words or less.

    When I first started writing flash and microfiction back in 2014 I came across Sarah at the Carrot Ranch. She blew me away with her skill at creating a world and filling it with compelling characters in 100 words. Well now she’s created a book with all sorts of juicy stuff. Do give it a whirl; you won’t be disappointed.

  11. Two characters stand at opposing sides of the screen. One a woman, looking somewhat ragged but still standing. The other a rectangular manuscript beast. The beast wobbles, stunned. The screen flashes. FINISH IT! The woman’s hands come together creating the publishing it button pulse.

    POW!

    The screen flashes again. VICTORY SARAH.

    Congratulations. Now on to round 2. FIGHT!

  35. Yay! Congratulations, Sarah! This is awesome! I’ve been waiting for your book to be published. You know I love reading the stories you publish on your blog. I’m sure I will enjoy these just as much. I have already downloaded my copy and am looking forward to reading them. Well done!       I know, my sweet friend, you've been so supportive (and patient). 🙂 I'm so happy you've gotten yourself a copy. They are a bit dark… Even the ones I rewrote from the Reef have a different twist/angle and are bit darker than they were before. Hope you still like them. That is true about being the best gift (books are always my favorite gift) and I look forward to your post! Thanks, Norah!

      • I was going to treat myself to the first story last night but I clicked the wrong link when I bought it and it wouldn’t download on my iPad (I bought the Android copy. I’ve never had trouble before. That’s dark!) I’ll have to try again tonight. If not I’ll just have to read it on my phone. Pity the print is so small; or if it’s large, it’s only a few words at a time! I guess that’s okay for short stories! I’m looking forward to them. 🙂 Have I told you that I enjoy dark short stories. I love Poe, Dahl, and O’Henry. You’re in good company.

  39. I am so far behind with blog posts (I’ve deleted a lot of them because I’ll never get round to reading them, but the special ones have been saved!). Afraid I was ill a lot in December (nothing serious, just inconvenient), so a lot of things have fallen behind and I’m gradually catching up.
    So, although I didn’t entirely miss the book launch, I did miss this post. Sorry.
    Great to know you’ve pushed the buttons and it’s out there. I do have a copy, and I have started reading. More importantly, I think you’ve got the formatting right – none of the irritating glitches I’ve moaned about in the past are there. I can only speak for the eBook, but I think you’ve cracked it, Sarah!

    • I hope you’re feeling better. That’s a super fun way to spend the holidays.

      I am SO far behind in the blogosphere and I wound up deleting posts, too. I couldn’t keep up. I was drowning. Don’t ever apologize for being behind on reading/commenting. It’s not that I don’t love seeing you here (love the new avi, BTW!) but I never want anyone to feel stressed on my watch. We’re busy. We have lives. Please don’t ever feel badly for missing posts.

      I’m so happy you have the book! 😊 I hope you enjoy it. The ebook…well… I love the paperback but I feel the ebook didn’t format as well. I don’t think I messed it up, it’s just the nature of the digital beast. The stories are short so if someone makes the text larger (or smaller) the endings or beginnings wind up on different pages. The paperback is cleaner because I have control over the layout. Ah, well. If you think it looks alright, I trust you. I really do hope you like it. Thanks, Graeme! 🙂

        It is easy to fall behind with blogs, and every once in a while I have to go back and cull my inbox. We do have lives as well – or so I’m told.
        Glad you like the avi. Had some photos taken last year for my new website (which is not still quite ready, but is shaping up). Thought it was time to upload one to my other sites (it’s all about branding!).
        As for your book, how could I not get a copy? Bearing in mind the conversations we’ve had on the subject, I had to see what the finished product looked like. As you’ve said, changing text sizes does alter the page layout, but for Kindle converts like me that doesn’t pose a problem, as long as we don’t suddenly find blank pages where there shouldn’t be one.
        I’ll be in touch.

I’ve been dying to ask someone about the ebook but was too chicken. And, yet, here I am in public doing just that. I suppose, if you’re used to reading on an ereader, it wouldn’t be odd.
