Spring
To what purpose, April, do you return again?
Beauty is not enough.
You can no longer quiet me with the redness
Of little leaves opening stickily.
I know what I know.
Life in itself
Is nothing,
An empty cup, a flight of uncarpeted stairs.
It is not enough that yearly, down this hill,
April
Comes like an idiot, babbling and strewing flowers.
~ Edna St. Vincent Millay
It’s spring. Though it feels more like a distant cousin. A time of year in which we struggle to find our place during the uncertainty of seasons. When we throw off our jackets and listen to blue jays. Then huddle in our heavy coats and listen to howling winds. When we both turn our face to the sunshine and dance between raindrops.
It is that unpredictability we crave when the earth beneath our feet is frozen solid in winter or lush with summer greens. But the fickle springtime plays in quicksand, leaving us wishing for stability, making us wary.
Sometimes we know what we know, regardless of the beauty around us. Sometimes in spite of it. And, sometimes, it just ceases to be enough to quiet us.
It is then we raise our voices. To communicate. To be heard. To say that we will not be lulled into silence with the unfurling bud and promise of a bright and beautiful thing.
We will not hush.
We will shout.
My random thoughts in 200 words or less.
Here’s to finding your voice, being heard, and speaking up for yourselves. Happy shouting, gentle readers. ❤

Beautiful musing, Sarah. Spring just arrived two days ago in my part of the country. 🙂

Thanks, Diana. 💕
I wore a winter jacket and boots today for real. And was cold. Last week was too warm in a light shirt. April. Bah. I love those last two lines: April Comes like an idiot, babbling and strewing flowers 😜🌷 Happy spring, my friend.

It’s a great one of hers. Do check out the whole poem in the link. (It’s not much longer than what I’ve quoted here but it’s excellent.) Happy spring, Robbie. 🌷

Hi Sarah – you’re words are always so beautifully arranged – and you’ve captured that uneasy feeling I get at the launch of spring.

Aw, thank you, Barbara. 💕
Right? That’s it. There’s an uneasiness about it. That late winter/early spring I’m-not-sure-what-season-I-am period. I won’t be sorry to see April go…babbling and strewing flowers as she leaves. 😜

Haha. It does that. Someone had to say it, eh? Thanks, Simon. Still Blog Battling? I miss those!

Well yes. You’re very right it normally is the most changeable season. Yes I am, you don’t feel inclined to do blog battles or is it a time thing?

Completely a time thing. I miss writing for The Battle. I’ll hop over to see the prompt and try to fit that in this month. 🙂

I love this! I feel your words far beyond spring literally. Yes, we must be heard and I believe we are. We’re still wearing parkas in between sweaters til weather settles but summer waits around the corner. ❤

Thanks, Debby. ❤️ I believe we are, too. We must decide at some point that we will be. Then…we shout. 😊 Stay warm, lovely lady. May is here tomorrow!

I can definitely tell it’s spring…as I sneeze up a storm. ACHOO!
It does seem to be a change in seasons for my life too, and like your description of spring, my life reflects the sunshine and storm clouds. Definitely not my favorite season, but one we’ve gotta get through to enjoy the perks of other seasons.

Yes. That. Our lives seem to reflect that of our surroundings (both inside and outside the home). Change of seasons make it more noticeable, perhaps? Eh. Who knows? Here’s to enjoying the perks of more stable seasons, my friend.

Beautiful thoughts, Sarah. I hope that, as April left, it left behind spring and stability. Enjoy May!

Thank you, Norah. I’m taking a quick peek over my shoulder right now to see if anything followed from April. 😉 Fingers crossed for some stability in the midst of change. Happy May! 💕

Just realized that I haven’t read much Edna St Vincent Millay, and why is that. Your post has inspired me to seek her out.
